Brief

Team: Sarah, Yves

In teams of two (or three), overlay an animated story or a piece of animated information (motion graphics) into the real world using Adobe After Effects, Aero, and augmented reality.

Inspiration

After watching various animation works from the list, these are the top 3 that really spoke to me.

Tend by Animade

The story in this one really spoke to me. It draws a distinct parallel to real life—addiction and losing sight of what really matters. The animation doesn't tell you directly what it's about but it lets you infer from the allegories and metaphors present in the story.

Good Books - Metamorphosis by The Buck

I was captivated by the fluid movement between different objects in this animation. It really drew me in and gave it a playful vibe. To me, it was a really effective storytelling device, as it keeps your attention with the playful and smooth movements.

Black is a Beautiful Struggle by Troy Browne

The message is amazing and the use of cut outs and collaging technique coupled with 2D drawings gives the whole animation a unique style of storytelling.

Concept

Inspired, I wanted to have a story that drew a parallel to the real world, similar to Tend, where it doesn't tell you right away what it's about or what the "lesson" is; but rather make you feel and infer from the storytelling.

Here's my rough concept in the early stages of conceptualizing:

Story of a flame (1st person POV while using AR)

  1. Flame appears in your palm (due to anger emotions)
  2. It's so cool that you play around with the flame
  3. Channelling the anger into the flame, end up destroying things in the environment and you are now surrounded in fire
  4. Panic, then, decided to put your hands together to meditate and by doing so the flame is squashed between the hands (fire subsides)
  5. A small cute flame appears at the tip of your finger (looks different from the other one, maybe more hopeful)
  6. You put it near a candle and the flame lights it up
  7. (haven't thought of transition but something like flame leading you to journal - with the words "It's ok to feel" appearing)
